Kristiansand, located along Norway’s stunning southern coast, is a family-friendly destination that offers a perfect mix of outdoor fun, wildlife encounters, and fantastic food. Whether you're traveling with little ones or older children, this picturesque town is packed with activities to suit every age group, from thrilling pirate adventures to unique dining experiences. With a focus on sustainability and local culture, Kristiansand provides a wholesome and exciting getaway for the whole family. Here’s how we spent a full, fun-packed day in this charming coastal town.
We kicked off the day with a visit to Dyreparken, Kristiansand's beloved zoo and amusement park. More than just a traditional zoo, Dyreparken is a wonderland of themed areas, animals from around the world, and exciting rides. It's the kind of place that can keep the whole family entertained for hours, if not days.
The animal exhibits are spread out across naturalistic enclosures, allowing kids to see everything from lions and tigers to native Norwegian wildlife like lynx and wolves. The park emphasizes conservation and sustainability, educating visitors about protecting endangered species and preserving habitats, which added an important educational layer to our adventure.
After visiting the animals, we headed over to Pirate Bay, one of Dyreparken's most popular sections. The pirate-themed area is filled with playgrounds, splash zones, and pirate ships that are perfect for young explorers. My kids were thrilled to hop aboard a wooden ship, pretending to sail the high seas while we watched from nearby benches, taking in the scenery and snapping photos of their wild adventure.
For a bit of nostalgic fun, we took a detour to Kardemomme By, or Cardamom Town, a whimsical, real-life recreation of the beloved Norwegian children’s book by Thorbjørn Egner. The tiny houses, cobblestone streets, and friendly atmosphere gave us all a sense of stepping into a fairy tale, and it was a lovely spot to slow down and take a breather before heading out for more action.
After our adventure-filled morning, we took a short drive to Kristiansand’s harbor area for a leisurely stroll. The harbor is a perfect place to relax and soak up the natural beauty of Norway’s coastline, with views of the sea, boats bobbing gently on the water, and a promenade lined with shops and cafés. For families, the harbor is a great spot to take a breather and let the kids run around while you enjoy some fresh air and maybe a coffee. The harbor area also highlights Kristiansand’s commitment to sustainability. Many of the restaurants and businesses here source their products locally and follow eco-friendly practices, so you can feel good about supporting the local community while enjoying the scenic surroundings.
When dinner time rolled around, we opted for Restaurant Rett i Garnet, an excellent seafood restaurant located right by the water. The name of the restaurant translates to "Straight into the Net," reflecting their focus on freshly caught, local seafood. Sustainability is at the heart of their menu, with a commitment to using seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and fisheries.
To cap off our day of family fun, we headed to Glowing Golf, an indoor mini-golf course with a twist — it's entirely lit by neon lights! The course is filled with glow-in-the-dark obstacles and fun, imaginative settings that kept the kids entertained from start to finish. Mini-golf is always a hit with the family, but Glowing Golf takes it up a notch with its playful and colorful environment.
The courses were challenging enough to keep the adults on their toes, but simple enough for the little ones to enjoy, too. It was the perfect way to end our day, with plenty of laughter, a few friendly competitions, and great memories.
Kristiansand is a town that truly has something for everyone. Whether you're adventuring at Dyreparken, taking in the scenic beauty of the harbour, or enjoying a delicious meal by the sea, this charming coastal destination offers endless opportunities for family fun.
Sustainability and locally-sourced food are woven into the fabric of daily life here, making it not only a great place to visit, but a destination that encourages thoughtful travel. Whether you're here in the warm summer months or visiting for winter festivities, Kristiansand is the perfect place for a family-friendly getaway year-round.
Just one charge away...
As the end of the year began to feel like it was staring us down, we wanted to charge up the van and head somewhere for the weekend. We needed to tell ourselves the year’s fun and exploration wasn’t over just because the sun would soon be setting around the time small children get out of school… that it’s fine, we can still get up and get out there! There’s plenty of days ahead to “hygge and home”.
