Malmö, Sweden’s southern gem, is a city where cultures converge, art flourishes, and flavors from around the globe come alive. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike are welcomed with open arms into a tapestry of traditions, cuisines, and creativity. Our day in Malmö was an ode to multiculturalism, packed with diverse experiences and ending with a perfect cocktail.
The day began at Brunchoteket, a beloved Malmö brunch spot where the menu is as international as the city itself. Each dish is prepared with care and a focus on sustainability, using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.
I opted for the vegan avocado toast, which was served on gorgeous sourdough bread and topped with house made za'atar, a roasted seed mix while my friend dug into the perfectly poached eggs benedict with smoked salmon.
We couldn't help ourselves of course, and ordered a stack of the fluffiest pancakes I've ever pushed my fork though on this side of the Atlantic.
The warm atmosphere and the variety of offerings was a reflection of Malmö's multicultural spirit—bringing together flavors from across the globe in one place. With a couple of lattes in hand, we felt fueled up and ready to explore the city.
From brunch, we headed to Folkets Park, the heartbeat of Malmö's community life. This green oasis isn't just a park; it's a space where families picnic, skateboarders showcase their moves, and local artists perform. Children played in whimsical playgrounds while adults lounged by the fountains, creating a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.
Leaving the park, we ventured into Möllevången, Malmö's most diverse neighborhood and a living celebration of the city's global influences. The streets buzzed with life as I strolled past open-air markets selling everything from Middle Eastern spices to tropical fruits. Each corner offered a new sight or aroma, and the community vibe here was palpable—this wasn't just a neighborhood; it was a melting pot where cultures intertwined seamlessly.
Next stop was the Moderna Museet, Malmö’s hub for contemporary art and creativity. The museum’s thoughtfully curated collection showcased work from international and Swedish artists, reflecting on themes of culture, identity, and sustainability. The museum itself even mirrors this ethos, with energy-efficient design and a commitment to promoting local artists. In the museum café, we took a much-needed break with a fair-trade coffee and a slice of rich chocolate cake. Watching the other visitors—families, students, and tourists alike—it was clear that the museum wasn’t just an art space; it was a cultural meeting point.
We walked ourselves over to Mitt Möllan, a buzzing food hall that exemplifies Malmö’s global culinary scene. Each stall offered dishes with distinct cultural roots, and the atmosphere was alive with laughter, chatter, and the clinking of glasses.
We started off with Jamaican jerk chicken—perfectly seasoned and paired with rice and peas, its bold spices a comforting taste of the Caribbean. My second dish was a Vietnamese banh mi, its tangy pickled vegetables and marinated pork a delightful contrast to the earlier flavors.
The beauty of Mitt Möllan wasn’t just the food; it was the communal spirit. Locals and visitors shared tables, creating a feeling of togetherness that epitomized Malmö’s ethos.
To round off the evening, we wandered over to Palermo, a stylish bar known for its inventive cocktails and electric but still cozy vibe. I ordered their signature cocktail, “The Palermo Twist,” a refreshing blend of aquavit, elderflower, and citrus with a subtle hint of Mediterranean herbs.
Sipping the drink, we soaked in the ambiance—an eclectic mix of music, lively conversation, and warm lighting that made everyone feel at home. Palermo wasn't just a bar; it was a space that captured the essence of Malmö: vibrant, inclusive, and unforgettable. And before you leave, don't miss a trip to the toilet — wink wink!
As we walked back to the car, the city's energy lingered with me. Malmö is a place that thrives on its openness, where cultures come together to create something greater. From the bustling markets of Möllevången to the global flavors at Mitt Möllan and the creative spark at Moderna Museet, Malmö is a celebration of diversity.
It's not just a destination; it's an experience—a city where you can taste the world, connect with its people, and leave feeling part of its community. For travelers seeking a place that embraces both the global and the local, Malmö is the perfect escape.

As the end of the year began to feel like it was staring us down, we wanted to charge up the van and head somewhere for the weekend. We needed to tell ourselves the year’s fun and exploration wasn’t over just because the sun would soon be setting around the time small children get out of school… that it’s fine, we can still get up and get out there! There’s plenty of days ahead to “hygge and home”.
