Nestled along Sweden’s breathtaking west coast, Smögen is a place where tranquillity and elegance meet rustic coastal charm. A weekend at Smögen Hafvsbad, a historic hotel dating back to 1900, is the perfect escape for anyone looking to leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the rejuvenating power of the sea. Open year-round, Smögen Hafvsbad offers an exceptional combination of rich history, modern luxury, and world-class service, making it a beloved getaway for Swedes and international visitors alike.
The drive to Smögen is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. Rolling landscapes, coastal views, and quaint villages line the route, setting the stage for a weekend of relaxation and renewal.
Opened in 1900, Smögen Hafvsbad is perched just above the sea, and the hotel's long history resonates in every corner — from the archival photographs that decorate the walls of each room to separate swimming areas for men and women, a quaint (although no longer enforced ) hold over from the past.
Upon arrival, the hotel staff made us feel immediately at home with warm smiles and offers of assistance. We quickly settled into our room, which combined Scandinavian minimalism with coastal charm, featuring soft linens, natural textures, and soothing shades of blue and sand. Our room offered sweeping views of either the sea or idyllic village, the perfect backdrops to unwind. And if you want to run away to relax with your four-legged friends, then they are also more than welcome here. Our world-travelling companion, Harper, was also warmly greeted with her own thoughtful goodie bag.
For dinner, we dined at Smögen Hafvsbad's stunning restaurant, which offers panoramic views of the sea and Smögen's iconic coastline. Known for its commitment to sustainability, the restaurant specializes in locally-sourced ingredients, showcasing the finest in Swedish cuisine.
We opted for the sharing menu, which was a literal feast for the taste buds and beautifully presented. Each course highlighted seasonal ingredients from local fishermen and farms, with flavors that were both comforting and sophisticated
From freshly caught seafood to artisan breads and local vegetables, every bite reflects the culinary richness of the region. The staff's attentiveness and knowledge of each dish enhanced our dining experience, and by the end of the meal, we felt deeply satisfied and connected to the flavors and rhythms of the Swedish coast.
Early the next morning, we embraced a tradition dating back over a century: a sunrise swim in Smögen Hafvsbad’s historic private bathing area. Like so many before us, we watched the first light spill over the horizon while taking a brisk, invigorating dip in the cool sea water. The private bathing area, its wooden dock and tranquil water juxtaposed dramatically with the surrounding rocky outcrops offered a refreshing start to the day, both physically and mentally.
After the swim, we treated ourselves to a morning in the hotel’s day spa, a peaceful oasis that offers a variety of treatments and products focused on relaxation and wellness. Using luxurious Elemis products, we enjoyed a soothing facial that left our skin feeling radiant and rejuvenated, followed by a relaxing massage to ease any remaining tension. The spa’s design, like the rest of the hotel, is calming and luxurious, with an interior sea of greens that encourage relaxation. By the end of the session, we felt entirely renewed, ready to explore the charm of Smögen’s village.
Later that day, we picked up a picnic lunch that the hotel had thoughtfully prepared for us and set off to explore the quaint village of Smögen. Known for its vibrant boathouses and lively boardwalk, Smögen is a picturesque slice of Swedish coastal life.
We strolled past the famous row of colorful houses, each with its own unique charm, before crossing the bridge to take in sweeping views of the harbour. Every turn offered postcard-worthy views, making it a joy to wander and soak in the ambiance.
Our picnic spot overlooked the water, where we savored our packed sandwiches and pastries, had a hot cup of coffee and watched boats glide by. The unhurried pace of life here was contagious, and with each bite and each view, our appreciation for this peaceful place deepened.
On our way back, we made one last stop at Ramsvikslandet Nature Reserve, only a ten-minute drive from Smögen. Known for its unique granite rock formations and coastal trails, Ramsvikslandet is a true natural wonder and an excellent final destination to end a weekend of serenity and exploration. We wandered along the rugged trails, taking in views of rocky coastlines and open sea. The fresh sea breeze, combined with the earthy scent of pine trees and coastal flowers, was an invigorating reminder of the pristine beauty this region has to offer.
Smögen Hafvsbad and the surrounding village provide a perfect blend of relaxation, elegance, and connection to nature. With their year-round themed weekend packages — including spa weekends , lobster safaris, and even collaborations with Volvo for unique experiences — Smögen Hafvsbad caters to every interest and ensures a truly memorable stay.
Their dedication to sustainability, with locally-sourced food and eco-conscious practices, made our visit even more meaningful.
And enough can not be said about the kind service and thoughtful hospitality that this property delivers, from sweet touches like the reception gift for our dog, to the extra effort made by staff to source a charging cord for our EV, after we discovered we'd been so excited about our trip that we'd driven off without one!
Leaving Smögen, we felt lighter and recharged, carrying with us the calm of the sea, the warmth of the hotel staff, and the pure joy of a weekend spent in one of Sweden's most beautiful coastal destinations.
For anyone seeking a true escape, where stress dissolves and beauty abounds, Smögen, and more specifically, a stay at Smögen Hafvsbad, is a perfect choice.

As the end of the year began to feel like it was staring us down, we wanted to charge up the van and head somewhere for the weekend. We needed to tell ourselves the year’s fun and exploration wasn’t over just because the sun would soon be setting around the time small children get out of school… that it’s fine, we can still get up and get out there! There’s plenty of days ahead to “hygge and home”.
