One Charge to Waterfalls and Churches: Vang

Chasing Waterfalls and Churches in Vang

Vang, located in Norway’s mountainous Valdres region, is a hidden gem brimming with natural beauty, historical sites, and a sense of tranquility that makes it the perfect escape from the bustle of modern life. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and focus on sustainable living, Vang is a destination that rewards both nature lovers and history buffs. We spent 24 hours in this stunning area, chasing waterfalls, exploring ancient churches, and enjoying some of the finest locally-sourced food Norway has to offer.

A Warm Arrival on a
Cold, Starry Night

Our journey began with a night at Gomobu Fjellstue, a cozy mountain lodge perched in the scenic Vang mountains. Gomobu has been owned by the same family for three generations, and its current proprietor, Thomas, greeted us warmly. The lodge, while updated for modern comfort, retains a rustic charm that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time.

Thomas shared stories about his family's history in the area and their commitment to maintaining the lodge's close connection to nature. Sustainability is a priority here: Gomobu uses locally-sourced produce for meals, and the cozy rooms are designed with eco-conscious materials.

Chasing Waterfalls (and Flour Mills) at Leine

After a restful night, we set out early to explore the flour mills at Leine , an iconic piece of Vang's history, with mist creating an atmospheric drive along the lake.  These mills date back centuries and were once essential to the local economy, grinding grain for the surrounding farms. The sound of the rushing river, which powered the mills, is a constant reminder of the region's deep connection to nature.

We were so fortunate to be the only visitors that gray morning, and from the flour mills, a short but invigorating hike led us up to a hidden waterfall nestled in the woods. The trail wound through pine forests, and the gentle sound of the cascading water became louder as we explored the little mountain woods. Reaching the waterfall felt like stumbling upon a secret sanctuary — the perfect place to pause and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Øye Stave Church

Next on the itinerary was a visit to the Øye Stave Church , one of Norway's oldest wooden churches, dating back to the 12th century. The church is an excellent example of Norway's stave church architecture, with its intricate wooden carvings and steep, slanted roof. Stepping inside felt like entering another era, where centuries of history and spirituality seemed to echo in the quiet wooden structure.

The church is beautifully preserved, and its setting, surrounded by lush greenery and distant mountains, adds to its mystical allure. Learning about how the church was reconstructed after being lost in a landslide centuries ago gave us an even deeper appreciation for the dedication to preserving these historical landmarks.

Warming Up at Tyinkrysset Fjellstue

By lunchtime, we were ready for a meal, so we pulled into Tyinkrysset Fjellstue , a family-run mountain inn known for its hearty, locally-sourced dishes. The lodge's dining room offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and the menu is a testament to Norway's commitment to sustainable, farm-to-table cuisine.

I opted for the reindeer stew, a local delicacy made with tender, slow-cooked reindeer meat, wild mushrooms, and root vegetables while my friend enjoyed a delightful version of Norway's typical fish soup. Every bite was a taste of the mountains, perfectly complemented by the rustic charm of the fjellstue.

Tyin Lake and Searching for Reindeer

After lunch, we decided to drive up to Tyin Lake , a high-altitude glacial lake known for its serene beauty and, if you're lucky, sightings of roaming reindeer herds. The drive itself was spectacular, with snow-capped peaks and vast open landscapes stretching out on all sides. While we didn't spot any reindeer that day, the journey was more than worth it for the views alone.

The area around Tyin Lake is popular year-round, offering hiking, fishing, and exploration in the summer and skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Vang is truly a destination for all seasons, with just as many opportunities to connect with nature in the summer as in the snowy winter months.

A Stave at Sunset

As the sun began to set, we made our final stop of the day at the Borgund Stave Church , one of Norway's most iconic stave churches. Built in the late 12th century, the church is remarkably well-preserved, its dark wood exterior blending into the eerie beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Borgund's intricate carvings and dragon-headed roof beams are a testament to the craftsmanship of the era,  and a wander through the cemetery surrounding the church brings home how many years have passed over this spot.

With the sun casting a golden glow over the valley, the church stood like a timeless sentinel, watching over centuries of history. It was the perfect place to end a day filled with nature, history and reflection.

Final Thoughts: Vang’s Timeless Beauty

Vang is a place where history and nature coexist harmoniously, where the past is carefully preserved and sustainability is at the forefront of daily life. Whether you're hiking to hidden waterfalls, exploring ancient stave churches, or simply enjoying the local cuisine, Vang offers an experience that feels both timeless and refreshing.

It's a destination that invites you to slow down, take in the scenery and appreciate the simple beauty of the world around you. Visit in the winter for skiing or in the summer for hiking and history, either way, Vang is sure to leave you enchanted.
