Nestled on the island of Gotland, Visby is a medieval gem that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Known for its cobblestone streets, ancient ruins and breathtaking natural beauty, Visby offers visitors a mix of history, relaxation and sustainability. Our visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site began with an easy ferry ride and unfolded into two days of exploration, indulgence and awe-inspiring views.
The adventure started with a ferry ride from the mainland, which itself was an enjoyable experience. The views of the Baltic Sea, with its serene waves and occasional glimpses of other islands, set the tone for what was to come.
Upon arriving in Visby, we checked into S:t Clemens Hotell, a charming, family-run hotel right in the heart of the town. This place exudes history and warmth. Harper, our four-legged companion, was thrilled to discover that their rooms are pet-friendly, complete with thoughtful touches like a water bowl and a cozy bed for furry companions.
One of the hotel’s most enchanting features is its proximity to the ruins of S:t Clemens Church, located right next door. These hauntingly beautiful ruins, framed by greenery and the blue sky above, made for a magical start to the day. As I explored, it struck me how seamlessly Visby blends its rich medieval history with modern sustainability efforts.
Sustainability is at the heart of S:t Clemens, from eco-friendly practices to their emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients at breakfast.. The buffet was stacked with all sorts of local and homemade treats, from the hotel's own coffee blend to honey made by the neighboring ruin's resident bees. After a hearty breakfast of locally sourced goodies—homemade bread, fresh fruit, and Gotland cheese—I set off to explore the historic town. Visby’s cobblestone streets wind through a maze of medieval buildings, each more charming than the last. The ancient Visby City Wall, with its preserved towers and gates, serves as a constant reminder of the town's storied past.
For lunch, we made our way to Creperie Logi, a cozy spot known for its savory and sweet crepes. I opted for a classic buckwheat galette filled with creamy goat cheese, spinach, and walnuts, paired with a refreshing cider from a local produce, while my friend went for the smoked salmon crepe. The setting, with rustic wooden interiors and an inviting terrace complete with friendly little birds, made it the perfect place to relax and people-watch. Next, we couldn’t resist a pastry from Warfsholm Bakeri, a charming bakery tucked away in the heart of Visby that we had been tipped off about at the hotel. Their cardamom buns are legendary, but I opted for a saffron scone that was almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. We took our treat down to the botanical garden to enjoy it while we planned the rest of our afternoon.

The Visby Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful retreat. This lush oasis, filled with vibrant flowers, towering trees, and ancient ruins, is a testament to Gotland's commitment to preserving its natural beauty. Wandering through the gardens, I found myself lost in the serene atmosphere, taking in the fragrant air and soft rustle of leaves.
A visit to Visby Cathedral (Sankta Maria Kyrka) followed. This 12th-century masterpiece boasts intricate details, stained glass windows, and a sense of timeless grandeur. Stepping inside, I felt the weight of centuries of history and the enduring beauty of Visby's spiritual heart.
No visit to Visby is complete without strolling past the Guntower (Kruttornet) , one of the oldest parts of the city wall. Standing by the edge of the sea, it's a reminder of Visby's maritime heritage and the role it played in medieval trade.
In the late afternoon, I ventured to Högklint Naturreservat , a nature reserve just a short drive from the town. The views from the cliffs were nothing short of spectacular. The jagged coastline, sparkling sea, and sprawling green landscape make this one of the most breathtaking spots on Gotland. Watching the sun dip lower in the sky, casting golden hues over the cliffs, was a moment I'll never forget.
Back in town, we ended the day with dinner at Bakfickan, a seafood restaurant renowned for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients. With the freshest daily seafood, and a super friendly staff to help make the right choice in food and wine, we found this restaurant to be the absolutely cherry on top of a perfect day. My friend enjoyed amazing seasonal crab while I relished every bite of a miso crusted piece of halibut. We strolled home completely satisfied on the rich proteins and carefully curated wines.
Visby is a destination that effortlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. From the medieval ruins and vibrant botanical gardens to the clifftop views and locally-inspired meals, every moment felt like a journey through time and place. But what struck us most was the town’s commitment to sustainability and community—a modern ethos woven into its ancient fabric.
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply in search of a peaceful escape, Visby promises an unforgettable experience. And as we gazed at the stars from the cozy comfort of S:t Clemens Hotell, I knew we only scratched the surface of this enchanting island of Götland.

As the end of the year began to feel like it was staring us down, we wanted to charge up the van and head somewhere for the weekend. We needed to tell ourselves the year’s fun and exploration wasn’t over just because the sun would soon be setting around the time small children get out of school… that it’s fine, we can still get up and get out there! There’s plenty of days ahead to “hygge and home”.
